"We didn't go to Alijos," said Excel skipper Shawn Steward December 22. "We tried Benitos, for 40 yellows in two hours. Then we fished on porpoise schools northwest of The Ridge. We got limits of yellowfin that day.

"The tuna were eating the 80 and 100-pound line in the corner," continued skipper Steward, "and some of them were 40 to 55 pounds.

"Then we went up to Cedros Island, where the fishing was as good as I've seen it. The Cedros yellows were mostly 17 to 22 pounds, and they ate the yo-yo iron in scrambled eggs and blue and white, 6X Jr. size. Up at the North End we found big, 30 to 50-pound yellowtail, and some of them handed us our you-know-what's. Coming up, we got 30 albacore on the last day."

The best tuna was a 71-pounder caught by Neil Peters of Long Beach. It won first place. Peters said he got it with a sardine on a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook, 50-pound Stren line, a Penn 10KG reel and a Calstar Grafighter 700H rod, after a 15-minute scrap.

Philip Salvia of Apopka, FL tied with Jerry Pederson of Norco for second place. Both had tuna of 49.4 pounds.

Eleven-year-old Cody Cornette of Julian, on his first multi-day trip, got honorable mention of his career-best tuna of 46 pounds and yellowtail of 41 pounds. He said he plays football and baseball in his fifth grade Julian Elementary class.

Jim and Kathy McCafferey of Medford, NJ also posed with a tuna and a yellowtail taken on the seven-day trip, with 29 anglers.
