Timing The Bite
The last two long range trips of the year 2000 arrived on New Year's Eve. Both the Shogun and the Royal Polaris found good yellowtail fishing along the Baja coast a day's cruise south of San Diego. Skippers remarked that the majority of the yellowtail came on yoyo-ed iron jigs. The same method was working at the same time for local anglers fishing at the Coronados Islands. Skipper David Ikeda of the Seaforth 3/4 day boat Mission Belle reported he found the same bite conditions as the boats fishing nearly 300 miles south.

"The fish were up and chasing around on the surface first thing in the morning," said skipper Roy Rose of the Royal Polaris, "then they went down."

Jackpot!! Aboard the Royal Polaris

"Plenty of Action"
Just back from a five-day Royal Polaris trip, Roy Rose said, "We tried San Pablo and Canoas, and it was good on yellows, with lots of bonito and barracuda. Mostly they were jig fish, on blue and white, and scrambled eggs colors, but on sardine and green and yellow, too. There was a little offshore breeze. Fishing was best until lunch. The it shut off."

Jack Segal of Huntington Beach had first place on the Royal Polaris five-day trip. He tied with Bob Pound of Lake Elsinore, who also had a 16.7-pound San Pablo yellowtail. Segal's came on a sardine on a dropper loop, Pound's on a Salas 6X Jr. jig in scrambled eggs pattern. Tim Ebner of LA was third, for a 16.4-pound yellowtail.

Big Benitos Yellowtail
"We fished at the San Benitos Island and at Canoas," said Shogun skipper Bruce Smith Dec 31, after a five-day trip. "The yellowtail were almost all iron fish. The biggest were at Benitos, but we had a bite at Canoas that started at two a.m. We had to leave at mid-morning, to come home. It was perfect weather. We had a lot of new long range anglers aboard."

Mike Rowe of Raleigh, NC won first place for a 32-pound yellowtail. He got it with a green and yellow Salas 6X Jr. jig, 50-pound Izorline, and Accurate 4/0 reel and a Seeker seven-foot Black Steel rod. Dudley Vaughan of Wingate, NC was second, for a 29-pounder, and Bert Wood of Temecula was third, for a 27-pound yellow. Robert Rodriguez of San Bernadino didn't enter the jackpot, but caught a 35-pound yellowtail.
