VIRGINIA LAKES/JUNE LAKE LOOP ...
The arrival of brisk fall temperatures sparked solid trout action at most Eastern Sierra destinations in the days leading up to the November 15 closure. The trout came out of the depths and went on the feed, making them easy targets for both conventional and fly tackle anglers. After November 15, almost all of the waters in the Eastern Sierras will be closed to trout fishing with the exception of the Lower Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir which will remain open all winter.
“Bank anglers are doing really well at June Lake,” reported John Logue at Ernie’s Bait and Tackle at press time. “The top baits are salmon or chunky cheese Power Bait and night crawlers. Guys that enjoy casting lures are doing well with small Rapalas.”
“At Rush Creek big numbers of small browns in the 1 to 2 pound range are being caught. Worms, Panther Martins and small Rapalas are the top offerings,” added Logue.
Virginia Lakes were the other hot spot on the June Lake Loop. Roostertails, Panther Martins or inflated worms are the top options for temping trout at the Virginias during the last week of the season.
“The fishing is very good on the Lower Owens,” disclosed Dan Farris at Brock’s Sporting Goods. “The river is flowing at 150 cfs and anglers are hooking a lot of trout on small nymphs. Gary Gunsolley drifted a new section of the river yesterday and hooked 20 trout in one spot on nymphs.”
At Pleasant Valley Reservoir, anglers are finding good action while fishing near the Power House. Most of the trout being caught are browns in the 16 to 22 inch range.
“The East Walker is running about 35 cfs right now, still at what I would consider winter flow rates,” reported Jim Reid at Ken’s Sporting Goods. “The fishing, however, has been pretty good. Lots of fish in the 10 to 15 inch range, and we’re hearing about quite a few fish in the 16 to 22 inch range as well. Tactics change some when the water is low, but the fish are still there and with the colder water temps they’re hungry.”
"The best action has been with small midge patterns and streamers. The California, Rosachi and Sceirine sections are all fishing well, again, just a matter of focusing on the deeper pools where the fish are holding," noted Reid.
Reid reported very good action at Bridgeport Reservoir for brown trout in the 2 to 6 pound range. Bait anglers working with Power Bait and worms were enjoying the best results, but fly and lure tossers were hooking up too as the season concluded.
