SPICER/MOSQUITO LAKES TROUT... Spicer, Union and Mosquito Lakes are the leading prospects for rainbow trout in the Ebbetts Pass region, since fishing at Alpine and White Pines lake has slowed down.

Trollers are catching lots of trout at Spicer Reservoir while using Apex lures, Needlefish, and Rapalas, as well as nightcrawlers behind flashers and small dodgers. The trout average 12 to 14 inches long, with a few in the 15 to 18 inch range gracing anglers’ stringers, according to Bill Reynolds at Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods.

“Bank fishermen are also landing rainbows at Spicer while using Gulp Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, and floating Power Eggs in the creek inlet near the boat ramp,” advised Reynolds. “Lure casters should try black Rooster Tails and Panther Martin spinners.”

Mosquito Lakes is yielding “excellent” rainbow trout fishing due to recent DFG trout plants. “Fly fishermaen should try stimulators, black ants, parachute black ants and black flying ants, adams, mosquitos, and woolly buggers,” said Reynolds. Lure tossers and bait dunkers should use the same offerings used at Spicer.

Union Reservoir is a solid prospect for rainbows in the 12 to 14 inch range “The trolling has been tough because there is so much kayaking activity on the lake,” noted Reynolds. “Fishing with bait and lures early and late in the day near the boat ramp and dam is a better bet.”

Brown bullhead catfish are available for anglers tossing out mini-crawlers, Berkeley Gulp Catfish Dough and other baits at Union. However, nearby Utica Lake is yielding better catfish action, said Reynolds.

“Lake Alpine has been producing tough fishing due to the recent heat,” said Reynolds. “The fish have moved to deeper water and anglers aren’t reporting many big fish. However, one local brought in a 5 lb. rainbow caught while trolling an Apex lure.”

The North Fork of the Stanislaus River has been tough due to the lack of trout plants. “Baitcasters will probably have the best luck split-shotting salmon eggs, floating Power Eggs, Crickets, or inflated worms with a 15 to 20 inch leader,” he added. “Fly casters can try bead head nymphs, ants, and bead head woolly buggers with a sink tip line, along with blue wing olive, hoppers, adams, and humpys patterns.”

Great Places to Fish

Lake Tahoe is known for its mackinaw trout, which run deep and weigh to over 20 lbs. These guys can be tricky to catch, but the fight is worth the effort. Tahoe also boasts of a healthy kokanee salmon population and rainbow trout. The Truckee River is a "Catch and Release," trout fishery. The area is dotted with alpine lakes. Some of the more notable being Stampede Reservoir, Meadow Lake, Donner Lake, Kinney Reservoir, Caples Lake and Loon Lake. All are accessible by car. The Carson River is a fly fishing destination. The Yuba River is big, fast, and deep. There is great fishing but sometimes you have to share the river with the gold miners. Another hot spot is the Lakes Basin area near Graeagle.
