PIT RIVER/BAUM LAKE RAINBOWS ...
"The weather pattern is leaning more towards fall, with lows in the 30s and highs in the low 70s to the low 80s," reported Steve Vaughn of Vaughn's Sporting Goods. "Fishing in most waters has reflected this with most locations in the Burney area having good reports of fish being caught."
Baum Lake is yielding a mixture of rainbows, browns and brookies. "The best results for the past few days have been on a zebra midge, though caddis and callibaetis are still picking up a few fish," said Vaughn. "Bait fishermen still doing best on crawlers or Power Bait, while lure fishermen are doing best on Panther Martins and Kastmasters."
The Cassel area is still sporting some caddis and callibaetis hatches. "Fly fishermen are taking a few trout on dries, but patience is a must," he disclosed. "Daytime temperatures will dictate when fishing should produce the best, together with the moon phase. Bait fishermen are using crawlers and salmon eggs. Lure fishermen are doing best on Roostertails and Panther Martins."
At Lake Britton, only a few crappie are being taken, but the bluegill bite is very good. Weed growth is very bad this year and has definitely affected the fishing and catching. A few smallmouth are being caught.
The wild trout section of Hat Creek is yielding fair hatches of caddis, callibaetis. Nymph fishermen are doing best with birds nest and copper johns in red or green. "The rainbow fishing is definitely tough for this time of year," Vaughn observed.
On the Pit River, Caddis pupa patterns in shades of brown seem to be the ticket currently, though rubber legs are also picking up fish. This is still a good bet for hardy fishermen interested in catching wild rainbows in the 12 to 20 inch range.
The Fall River is producing rainbow trout for fishermen using wiggle-tail zug bugs, added Vaughn.
Great Places to Fish
The Intermountain Area lies between Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. The elevations range from 3,000' to 5,500' with a few mountains overlooking lava flows, lush farm land, forest, brush land, lakes, rivers and streams. Can you say TROUT? The Intermountain IS California's premier trout fishery. Hat Creek, Fall River, Pit River, Baum Lake, Lava Creek, and Lake Britton are world famous for the size and varieties of their trout. Much of the area is Catch & Release, check your regs. The trophy browns are a fly fisherman's favorite. If you would like to really get away from it all Medicine Lake on the Shasta Lava Flow is a good place to troll for rainbows. You will also find fantastic wild trout fishing in the Pit River around Alturas. The pressure on the fishery is lighter here but there aren't as many places to fish as around Burney and Fall River Mills. The Warner Mountains also offer limited high mountain opportunities.
