New Hogan

Striped Bass are caught throughout the year, but the best time is in the spring from April through June. Trolling threadfin shad and/or anchovies is the most consistent method. However, tossing Kastmasters, Rapalas, wormtail jigs and a variety of top water lures can be great when you encounter a school of stripers breaking the surface as they chase shad. Remember: fish at the edges of the school and never run your boat through them because that will spook the fish. During the summer and early fall, early and late in the day are the best times to pursue the stripers because of the heavy recreational boat and water ski traffic. Bank fishing for stripers with cut anchovies, sardines and other baits can be good off the points near the boat ramps.
Channel Catfish can be found throughout the lake. Summer and fall, when the water temperatures are warmest, and during the winter and spring after warm rains are the top times to pursue the cats. Fish mackerel, nightcrawlers, shad, sardines, and chicken livers.
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass offer decent action for anglers tossing out plastic worms, grubs and Senkos around structure. Bluegill and crappie are also found in the coves of the reservoir.

New Hogan does not sustain a trout fishery, but the Calaveras River below New Hogan Dam offers good wild rainbow fishing from the 4th Saturday in May through March 31. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. The daily bag limit is one hatchery trout or one hatchery steelhead.
