The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has teamed up with Foodlink and Raleys to feed the homeless salmon for this Holiday Season.
The DFG, through the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, provided 12,000 pounds of salmon to Foodlink on November 27 for those who would otherwise go hungry, according to DFG's Public Information Officer, Patrick Foy. The fish were then taken to Raley's where the butchers volunteered to fillet the fish.
After the fish were filleted, Foodlink distributed the fish to organizations that prepared the food and fed Sacramento's hungry. "After the fish was filleted, we divided up the food and gave it to different food closets, food for seniors, and shelters like the Sacramento Area Community Kitchen," said Sacramento Area Programs Director for Foodlink, Cindy Dunning.
The salmon used were taken during their normal spawning migration. If these fish were not used to help feed the hungry, they would otherwise have died after spawning.
