SMUD's Trout Derby Set For December 9-10

The Rancho Seco Recreational Area will be hosting SMUD's semi-annual trout derby on December 9-10.

The 160-acre lake has been stocked with rainbow trout weekly since mid-November and an additional 500 pounds of trophy trout will be released in preparation for the derby.

Tickets for the derby can be acquired at the gate and will cost $3. The derby will begin at 6 in the morning each day. Anglers 16 years and older must have a valid California Fishing License in order to participate in the derby.

Places 1 through 14 will receive cash prizes for adults, 16 years and older. First place will receive 100 dollars. Second place will land 75 dollars. Third place will walk away with 60 dollars. Fourth place will get 25 dollars and an annual fishing pass. Fifth through ninth place will take home 25 dollars and a one day fishing pass. And places 10 through 14 will receive 20 dollars and a one day fishing pass.

Children, under 16 years, will receive cash prizes for placing first through sixth place. First place will get 50 dollars. Second place will walk away with $37.50. Third place will go home with 30 dollars. Fourth place will receive $12.50 and a 3 day fishing pass. Fifth place will walk away with $12.50 and a one day fishing pass. And sixth place will get 10 dollars plus a one day fishing pass.

Derby rules will include: All participants must possess a valid Derby ticket and park entry permit. Anglers can cast from shore, fishing pier, or their own boat (electric trolling motors only--no gas motors). Derby tickets must be filled out by each Derby participant in order to be valid at weigh-in. You will not be eligible for any prizes if a Derby ticket is purchased after you catch a trout.

Awards will be mailed after December 10, 2000. All trout entered in the Derby must be weighed at the Rancho Seco Park maintenance shop. Decisions on weight and trout eligibility are made by Rancho Seco Park personnel. Rancho Seco Park employees reserve the right to have any trout cleaned that is entered in the Derby. Trout must be caught according to State Fish and Game laws. Only one prize per person is allowed. Trout must be checked in before the posted time of 5 p.m. on the day of catch.

The 400 acre recreational area offers more than just fishing like full service facility offers picnicking facilities, RV and tent camping sites, wind surfing and pedal boat rentals, and beach and swimming areas.

Rancho Seco is 25 miles south of Sacramento, approximately 15 minutes east of Highway 99 on Twin Cities Road. The park is owned and operated by SMUD.
