DFG Closes Down Upper Klamath Adult Salmon Take To Sport Anglers

On September 27, the Department of Fish and Game closed down sport fishing for adult king salmon upstream of Coon Creek on the Klamath River.

"DFG creel checkers said projections indicate anglers would reach their adjusted impact quota of 710 adult fish by the end of the day on Wednesday," said DFG Resources Agent Paul Wertz. An adjusted "impact quota" not only takes into account the number of fish that have been caught by anglers, but also includes a percentage for fish that have died through hook and release.

According to the DFG, Lower Klamath anglers reached their impact quota of 2,100 adult king on September 2. The Trinity River catch remains well below its quota of 1,390, according to the latest census. This year's Klamath-Trinity basin quota on take of adult fall-run king salmon was set at 4,200 fish.

Fish and Game said indications are that this year's migration of salmon spawners into the Klamath River basin may be one of the better runs of recent years, unless the fish are arriving earlier than normal.

Iron Gate Hatchery northeast of Yreka reported having 500 salmon in holding ponds and large numbers in the river below the hatchery. At a counting facility at the mouth of the Shasta River, biologists report they have already recorded the passage of 3,500 spawners, 300 more than totaled all last year.

The DFG said that Klamath anglers can resume fishing for adult king salmon upstream of the I-5 Bridge near Hornbrook up to 3,500 feet below the Iron Gate Dam if, and when, Iron Gate estimates that 8,000 spawners have arrived at the facility. "It's like clock work, and I wouldn't be surprised if it re-opens sometime in the near future," said Wertz.

Though the adult salmon catch has been currently closed off to sport anglers, "jack" salmon, salmon less than 22 inches long, and hatchery steelhead are still open for catch.
