(Smith River) "Let's Fish With Trish" is hosting the second annual Gals Only Steelhead Fishing Derby on the Smith River from March 22-24, 2001.

"This event was created after several wonderful trips to the Smith River. I just felt it only fitting I share this feeling with other women, and what a better way to do that than by having an All Woman's Derby Event," said Trish Sharman.

"We did better last year than the Cal/Ore Derby has done in the last 26 years." The team that won was a mother and daughter who had never fished for steelhead before. "It is so rewarding that I want to keep this going. Plus this is a great place for girls to get into fishing, especially for those who feel less threatened by learning from other women," explained Sharman.

This 3 day event will include 2 full days of drift boat fishing with experienced and local guides, 2 early morning breakfasts, 2 river sack lunches, 3 evening dinners that include an open bar and appetizers, a tour of the local non-profit "Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery", a multi-colored silk screened official derby shirt, a multi-colored embroidered official derby hat, nightly live and silent raffle and auctions, and evening special guests, photos and door prizes.

Susan Hargesall of the California Department of Fish and Game, and coordinator of "Becoming An Outdoors Woman," will be attending, speaking, and fishing at the event.

The derby fee is $635, and is limited to 40 ladies. The cost of the derby does not include room reservations. "The Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery and the Smith River Kiwanis Club, which finances this local hatchery, will be receiving donations raised from the proceeds of the nightly auctions and raffles," said Sharman. The Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery raises king salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead to supplement the natural stocks on the Smith River.

"You're guaranteed to have a great time and share stories and experiences with ladies nation wide that enjoy fishing and the beautiful outdoors," said Sharman.

"Once you hook a steelhead, you're hooked forever," said Sharman.
