Exploring the East Cape
MARTIN VERDUGOS BEACH RESORT

MARTIN VERDUGOS BEACH RESORT This is the third in a series of articles in which I review some of the hotels and fishing at the East Cape. (12/28/99)

Martin Verdugos Beach Resort is located in the small town of Los Barriles, Baja California Sur and is situated right on the beach. This resort which has been in the Verdugo family for five generations, has just completed an addition of 17 rooms, bringing the total of rooms to 29. The hotel staff speaks English and is always warm and friendly, offering their assistance to make your stay a pleasant one.

All rooms are air conditioned; most have two queen sized beds; a few rooms are available with kitchenettes. Room packages include breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is served in the roof garden restaurant, overlooking the Sea of Cortez and mountains surrounding the town of Los Barriles. Hotel amenities include Palapa bar, fresh water swimming pool, private beach and a loading dock for ease and safety when boarding the boats. As part of the package, fish freezing is also offered; fish filleting is performed for gratuities. Other activities include beachcombing, scuba diving, surf fishing and, ATV rentals.

Prices range from $43.50 per room (double occupancy) for a standard room to $51.00 per room with kitchen (double occupancy). All rates include taxes.

Fishing Fleet

The fishing fleet is well maintained, has English-speaking captains and consists of diesel powered 28 cruisers equipped with VHF radios, 23 super pangas and 22 pangas which are competitively priced with taxes included. A 28 cruiser goes for $275 per day and includes captain, deck hand, ice chest and restrooms on board. 23 super panga is $180 per day and includes captain and ice chest. 22 panga costs $130 per day and includes captain and ice chest.

Overall opinion of Martin Verdugos Beach Resort:

Hotel is neat and clean with a friendly English-speaking staff; prices are a great value. The boats are well maintained and competitively priced. The drawback is dinners are not served on the premises, although several restaurants are nearby and offer a variety of dinners and are offered at a low price ($5 to $10 USD) within a very short walking distance.

Lillian Hubbard It is the policy of Cabo Fishing Tours not to book group trips during the months of December and January; therefore there is no fishing report included with this review of the East Cape.

However we wanted to include this photo of the Fisherperson of our last trip: Lillian Hubbard of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who brought a 238 pound blue marlin to the boat unassisted!
