New Melones Night Fishing
Jul 26th, 2010 at 10:54pm

Hi all,
My wife and I and some friends of ours are going to try for some night cats out at New Melones on wednesday night. I've never been much of a cat-fisher, but we're going to give it a whirl. I went once last year, fishing off the bank at the Tuttle Town ramp, and we got a few bites on chicken liver, but could never get a hook-up.

So I am looking for some advice on baits for New Melones and maybe locations. We can do bank or boat, so if it is better to launch the boat and anchor in a cove, we can do that.

Any advice would be awesome! Thanks!

Also, what is the bag limit and minimum size for a keeper cat?

The best spot for me when bank fishing was over in the houseboat cove, near the marina.  I used sliced beef liver with a liberal amount of garlic salt on it.  It stays on the hook better then the chicken livers.  But, I've also used the chicken livers, and wrapped them on the hook with a bit of plain sewing thread.

...

I would use the boat, lets you cover more area, and saves you the hile down tho the water from the Marina to the waters edge.

Glory Hole Sports, at the Angels Camp access is a good source for bait, and advice.

Hey Mike, I read a really good tip one time was to take some pantyhose and cut out a small square and stuff the chicken liver into it and then hook the pantyhose.

Yea, we did that last time. The liver seems to stay much better!
We had bites last time on the liver, but couldn't get a hook-up. This year we're packing sardines, anchovies, chicken liver, night-crawlers, and I think I'm going to try and get some beef kidney. Smiley

I also picked up a submersible light for some trout. I'm hoping to catch some of those for the dog. She loves fresh trout.

Slowish bite... Brought 2 home, a 3rd (and of course, the largest) was lost when a knot slipped, I think. The small one of the day was perhaps 1lb only, the bigger one was just a hair over 3. Comparing the fighting strength of the one that got away to the 3lber I got in to the boat, I'd say the escape artist was in the 4lb neighborhood.

We tossed chicken liver, crawlers, sardines, and anchovies in various combos with and without pro-cure in sardine or garlic. The only bait they bit all night was unscented anchovies.

Tried a submerged light in the house boat cove (tied off to an open buoy from 4:30am-sunrise. The light was down about 12 feet and dropped crawlers to about 25ft. Nothing doing at all, and the wind was battering us.

Good times!
