765 powell as a frog rod?
Jun 27th, 2010 at 7:35pm

I doubled my powell 765 flipin stick as a frog rod about a month ago. Since then my hook-up ratio has improved dramatically. Casting the frog accurately isnt really a issue. I was using a 7' rod before and I was having problems hooking the fish or having the shake the hook. But this 765 is awesome for walking the frog and you have the leverage you need for setting the hook even on longer casts. I guess what Im getting at is.... Does anyone use a 765 powell, dobyns or any other fliping stick as a frog rod? I know people perfer a shorter 7'2" or 7'3" for frogs. What differences are there in a frog rod vs. a flipping stick??

I used to use a 7'6" flippin stick, which got stolen and I replaced it with a powell 735.  Mostly because it's their dedicated frog rod and I like having a frog on the deck most of the year.  Honestly, part of me wishes I would have gotten a 765, all of my rods are typically a little longer than most people use and a 7' rod now almost seems short to me.  There really is not much difference, each rod manufacturer is going to make their rods a little different.  I know when frog rods were first being designed, people wanted a little shorter length for making sidearm casts into tight places and what-not.  Back east people seem to be more comfortable with shorter rods in those types of situations, and since thats where most of the bass fishing market is, companies have played to that market.  In all reality there is typically not going to be much difference.  Generally a frog rod will just have a little more "tip" than the older flippin sticks which they say helps with soft landings and makes walking the bait easier.  In my eyes I think a lot of it has to do with marketing, I know certain people who like an 8' rod for a frog and I know Bobby Barrack wanted his rod 8' but was told it'd have a hard time selling west of Texas so he settled for 7'10".  Just a little story I guess.  I am with you though, 7'6" is an awesome length for a frog rod

Effisimo,I recently started throwing frogs and first I used a 7'0 MH Fenwick I got from dtack,(thanks again)and quickly found out I needed a heavier rod.I switched to my Daiwa flippin stick and have been extremely pleased with casting and hookup ratio as well.I have been thinking of getting a Dobyns 735 but don't see a need. Cool

I used flippin' sticks as frog rods in the past.  Still do.  Honestly, I'm not good enough to know the difference between a "real" frog rod and a flippin' stick.  Same thing to me.

I swear, fishing is so much like golf.  For the amateurs, what is the difference between a Pinnacle golf ball vs. a Titleist ProV1x???  Nothing.  You can get two dozen Pinnacles for $20.  Or, you can get a dozen ProV1x's for $60!!!   Grin Cheesy Cheesy Smiley Wink Cool Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Huh Huh Huh

The shorter rods just makes it easier to work the bait. A lot of people use flipping sticks and I've even heard of people using an 805 for frogs!

Hmmmm.....I have a Dobyns 705 flipping stick that I thought was a terrible mistake.  A change to a frog rod could be  a possibility.....but that may take a new 7:1 reel.  Something to think about.  I don't even know if I HAVE any frogs.....that's ALL I need. Cheesy

The 765 is a tad under powered for fishing a frog in the nasty stuff imo. I have used a  766 quite a bit for frogging though. I do use a Dobyns 736 as my dedicated frog rod though.

When I was in my pontoon boat I loved the shimano 7'11" flippin stick for frogs for the extra leveragewhile sitting so low in the water. It has a lot of backbone

I havnt made up my mind on how it is from the boat yet, havnt done that much frogging out of it yet. But the longer rod gives more power on a long cast for solid hookups

I use a Shimano Crucial 7'6 for frogs. It has a lot of backbone and a good tip for better action. I know there are better rods going for higher prices, but this thing has come through without problems. It also doubles as a backup small swimbait rod. As far as Powell's go, I don't like any of them except for a couple of their lighter finesse rods, and that's only because they're fairly cheap.

Its been over a month since I started using my 765 as a frog rod. I haven't been out as much as I have wanted but I have been out a few times. I still love using the 765 as a frog rod. The backbone really allows for the hookset you need when frog fishing. Im landing most of the fish that blow up on my frog. Instead of just a few. If I could change one this it would be the tip. I wish the tip was a little softer, so the bait would walk easier. But I can get it walking enough to induce a strike. Frog fishing is a blast!!!!!

Whatever works for you is the best choice. I met Bobby Barrack a while back and he turned me on to the Lamiglas 806 and 797. Both awesome frog rods for the Delta. With those long rods you set the hook, turn the fish and get them coming towards you on the hookset. In the lakes I use a Daiwa V-series $50 7'6" flippin stick and it does great. For those of you who don't throw a frog on the lakes, DO IT! It really gets big bites(I think they have never seen it).
