Trout Wagon Lake Sonoma / Berryessa

11/16

Fished the mainbody today up at the No ski bouys where the fishing seemed to be a little better than by the dam. The fish are really spread out right now and holding tight to structure. The problem is those trees is what thay use for cover so you need to just be outside the tree line to be free of tree limbs getting you. I lost my best excel spoons today 2 in one day, thats fishing in sonoma. I trolled for a good 2 hours before the first fish and it was the best of the day, just shy of 4lbs. the fish was 3lbs 15oz. and it was a little deformed in its spine like it was an injury a long time ago.
...

I stuck around the bouys and got another one about 2 1/2 lbs at 75 ft. on a cinnimon hand made fly.
...
I picked up another one about an hour later a plump 2lb 14oz beautiful fish , as well as 2 missed strikes.
...
Today they liked it faster at 2.2 - 2.5 and the water temps are 59-60 so it's close to turning but not fully yet. There are fish from the surface to 80ft that are active & feeding, but there hard to get to bite and there tough to find so when you see bait it's good to work that area hard and be patient.I have a trip on the 23rd set up, so be updating next week. good luck fishing and remember CATCH & RELEASE WILL ONLY PRESERVE THIS GREAT FISHERY!!!!!

11/24

Got out to the lake today for a scout trip. my trip was poseponed due to my clients got the flu(hope not swine)
So i decided to go and do a little scout further past my previous trip. The fish seem to have come up in the water table as the temps continue to drop. The surface temps were down to 57 degrees so, I saw a lot more bait close to the surface and some really, really deep. I set lures down at 70 and 65ft for nothing, So I decided to change gear and shallowed up with flies and nightcrawlers. I got whapped right away on the crawler at 25ft. a wonderful chunky LL steelie right at 2lbs. catch & Release
...
After that hit , I re-threaded a crawler and put it in the same place with the same results and line peeler hit on the non-clicker reel, so it was moving for a few seconds because I was messing with the FF. Got this guy into the net and released her at a cool 2lbs 4oz. running on pure night train adrenaline.

...
Talked to a few locals who had good success up river at yorty and cherry creeks the got them up to 4lbs and both fishing party reported that the were busted off repeatedly by some brut fish and nasty trees up there. will be on the water soon for some up river action. Happy thanksgiving to all

Lake Berryessa Report

Took a trip up to Berryessa to check out the action at the lake.Got to Capell Cove Launch to find 2 other boats there and thats it, no pressure what so ever. The lake is pretty low now and you have to be carful when launching there is a gravel hump from last years low water bulldozering of the dirt on the ramps and it gonna eat some props in low light conditions if you were not expecting it. stay tight to the dock and you will be OK. Lake temps were 54 degrees solid through out the lake , Started tight on the banks of skiers to intice 1 trout hitting a speed trolled rapala right on the surface and a strike that didn't stick, trout was 15" and clean. Changed gears and drifted minnows in the same spot and just north of the big Island up in some coves were you can see birds just hanging over the bait. Tha action got hot but it wasen't the species I was targeting, Catfish and squawfish ruled the show. 8 catfish to a whopping 15lbs on the dot, and 2 squawfish to 4lbs. and 1 salmon going 9" released. A boat not to far from me was nailing some nice 2lb kings doing the same thing with minnows and jigging some spoons for the same results. I snapped a light weight graphite rod on a nice cat, it was like bringing knife to a gun fight. I had no chance to bring up this one with light tackle so be prepared to hammer  large fish if your targeting them. 40 ft all the way down was most of the action, the trout were on top with the bass and kings down below, drop shot rigs set up with live bait on a drift is deadly if you are in the right zone, you can see the fish on your finder and adjust your depth accordingly and most likely you will hook up with something.

Jan 09 2010 the Spanish Flats country store & deli is putting on a derby for trout and salmon, winner takes all the cash for first place and some for our derby sponsers(GVF) will putting lures for 2nd - 5th prizes for the anglers who place. 5$ per person and species you enter, kids under 16 yrs are free. Marcia Ruiz is our host and I'm her support host with Rich from GVF lures to say a few things about his product-spinners and bugs for trout and kokanee. If you are intrested contact marcia at 707-966-1600 for registration or you can PM me for questions. Lasts monthes derby was a rain out so were hoping for better weather. There will be prizes for kids too so let's get out there and do some fishing at berryessa. There will be a derby each month upto june so keep tuned for the next one as well,.

thanks and happy holidays !!

Took out a hooker  Dan Baker of wheatland for a little king fishing at Lake folsom. Launched and on our way out to the dam, and we put down and started at 40ft to the surface. Right away we got hit and put a little 13"er in the box soon enough we were getting a hit or a fish every 30mins. Around noon were were near the floating potty when we we tied into a nice fish going around 18-19 but a SDR right at the boat, oh well at least he got to fight it. We picked up and headed for the south fork  and finished up knocking 4 more down while working a bait school in there. Wind made it cold and tough but hey that's fishing folsom. We finished up with 11 fish and 8 in the box, 9 kings to 16" and 2 trout to 13".

Gear

RMT UV pink hyper dodger w/ UV cotton candy hootchie really lit it up today got alot of the fish and strikes
RMT silver Ice dodger w/ double glow green splatter hootchie
RMT Orange Crush Glow dodger w/ 2 1/2 natural RGT w/ white pearl spinner blade

Gold starlight w/ Chartruse RGT

RMT UV Watermelon dodger w/ Uncle larry's Hot belly spinner

all tipped with anchovey fillets and Pro-cure in anchovey gel
on the lure

the surface to 44 ft deep

speeds were 1.8 - 2.2 mph

5-31 monday at Berryessa - It's starting to roll!
Yesterday at 8:09pm       Had the pleasure of taking out Jared Thompson and Alea German  both of Winters for alittle Kokanee & king fishing! We met in a very empty parking lot at 5:30am and we shoved off and away we went headed straight to the south goat island area. about 5:50 we were in the water and Jared was first up on the firing line
...
We get a fat 15" koke in the box, jared is all fired up high fiving for his first kokanee, then all of the sudden the outside rod erupts with a violent takedown. I jump on it and pass to Alea and she battled and battled back and forth with the line coming in and out  for a good 5 min, we had 3 attempts at this big King running 19-20" easily. Ah Houston we got a problem!! we got a line tangled on the leader of the thrashing fish, which I just passed the other rod over to jared to net this guy and the leader pops!! arrrggggggghhhh! yells Alea, to much pressure on that line got the best of us, That's fishing. We regroup and loop back to that zone, sure enough Alea gets revenge, a new setup is just as deadly to these fiesty kings, she pulls up a fat, solid King right at 17"
...
From then on it was a kokanee, then a king , a kokanee then a king about every 20-25 min, farming a few. missing the strike( or just more of less the fish was banging on the rod , then gone) Then the clouds starting rolling in and that killed the koke bite, but we were still getting the kings to hit , but sticking them in the box was getting ruff, jared farmed every king he hooked  as Alea showed him how to do it all day long  Weird things were going on today too, I had a koke to hit my setup 20 pulls back right on the surface with the line still in my hand! Fish on, Fish off just like that. Also, I was shocked to see very little as in boaters all together
...
as we moved over into shallower water the bite, which kinda slowed at the noon hour picked back up, Then Alea bagged an Nice 17" koke with a RGT tipped with Anchovey(weird)
in 76 ft of water(weird), 30 ft down. Finished with a double on a kings, popping one of them and farming the other, They decided 7 fish was enough, even with all the action we got ( which could of filled 3 limits) thats all we could get in the box. So, there pumped on the Memorial day BBQ there having tonight
...
Queen of the Kings
FarmerJared!!Luckyhisbetterhalfnewhadtohandlearod!![IMG]http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk302/troutwagon22/alea%20and%20jared%20thompson/DSCI2372.jpg
The dynamic duo!!
...
So, after dropping off the two at cappell cove, there were a few boats clogging up the lane so, I pulled out lunch and headed back out to the honey hole to see if I can get a few for our dinner, and  start up where I left off
...
A line smoking 16"er
2 mins later after re-deploying
...

A 3-D shot of the fish!
Then again another fat fish but this time i was not so lucky,
I farmed it trying just a little to hard to net it. Then Silence, all activities came to a crashing halt and that was it! here are some more pics
...
Freshwater shrimp? This was wrapped up on my line when we brought a fish up, stuck on the tip of the pole. or a Hatching crustation?(weird)
...
Downrigger shot(note an empty back round)
...
yet a full lot and parking on the street!
...
a messed up koke mouth( but still works because he was fat!!)(weird)

So that weird theme stuck aroud all day, but Im not complaining, just thanking that the bite is finally, maybe, hopefully coming on!! Dates availible thru august!! It's Time to get you Kokanee on!!

quick Berryessa update:

July 11th

the kokes have schooled up and preparing for the spawn, this is stage 1 for the koes and the will begin to show a little color but not alot just yet. The males will kype out and deform into a humpback salmon with a hook jaw. this is in the later stage.

The bite is on and off depending what location you are fishing. Right now the Koke grounds are the dam, skiers cove, the ranch house and the big island

silver dodgers in the morning are working good and then switch to gold dodgers as the sun gets high.

pink and green have been the best for me, with blue coming in a cool 2nd.

hootchies, rgts and UL spinners in pink worked great today

the bite was a little late today turning on around 10am and roaring to 1pm

44-55 ft best depth

1.4-1.7 best speeds

pink corn with herring and garlic oil mixed from pro-cure
