ICR - Caples - Unbelievable (Pics)
Oct 20th, 2009 at 6:10pm

Talked to Supa Fly Kiwi Guy over the fence yesterday and found out he will be leaving to work down in San Diego for 5 weeks. He had most of the day off on Tuesday so we decided on one more trip up 88. Decided to fish Caples, Red and the W. Carson. With the bad weather up on the pass yesterday decided to spend an hour or so at ICR to let the sun deglaze the roads. ICR was beautiful. No wind and not so cold. We crossed the dam and fished for awhile. We got one 19 inch holdover bow on a gold 1/4 oz Kastmaster. Boy was it a fatty. Headed up 88 and over Carson Pass. We were hoping to have the same nice weather at Caples that we had at ICR. It was not to be. The parking lot at the spillway was covered with ice, snow and slush. The air temperature was the low to mid thirties with a stiff east wind pushing white caps down the lake. I didn't think we would stay there long. After a couple of casts our minds were changed. To make a long story short we fished with Kastmasters, Flies and small plastics. In a little over 3 hours we landed around 40 trout between us. These were mostly Browns between 10 and 15 inches. We had 4 Brookies and 4 Bows. Of the 4 Bows 3 were over 10 pounds including my all time BP trout of 12 pounds +. Needless to say we never made to Red or the Carson. Thank you for fishing with me Gareth. Thanks for the net job and the pics. Have a safe trip and enjoy the scenery along 395. See you when you get back. I've got a couple more spots to show you. It was a wonderful unbelievable day. Fish porn anyone?

Richard,
Congrats on the PB. You two hit some paydirt. We both know how Caples can turn on real quick, but off just as fast. I figure I have at best a few more weeks before the trips over the hill stop until April river opener. Then I will be stuck fishing down here in the low lands.  Cry
Gareth have a safe and eventful trip, I like SD, been a few times and always been fun. When you come back maybe CC will bring you down for a trip with Hunkfisher and I to Amador. I think you would enjoy (although not as much as today).

See you soon CC
