Bridgeport Reservoir Still going Strong(Pics)
Sep 4th, 2009 at 4:56pm

I hadn't been to Bridgeport Reservoir for a couple of months and expected to find the marina dry but there is still enough water to launch small boats in the marina and the water overall looks really good for this time of year.  Bigger boats are lauching at the "Bathtub" There are pods of Algea floating throughout the Lake but plenty of clean water.  As they traditionally do this time of year the fish are starting to stack up in the East Walker River channel.  I fished from slightly south of the marina to about half a mile north on the east side directly up from the marina, about 100 yards from shore.  There are a ton of fish still in there with regular stockings taking place by both DFG and the Bridegport Fish Enhancement Program.  There is a nice population of holdover fish in the 1.5-3 lb. (with some much bigger than that) range and the red meat on these fish looks very good.  I caught about ten or eleven and kept five releasing the lip-hooked fish and cutting off a few.  The fish today ranged from 14-20 ".  It was odd that in the morning I caught all my fish on a worm/mallow combo and they wouldn't touch the yellow Powerbait.  Later in the morning it switched and the only thing they would hit was the yellow Powerbait.  This lake has fared much better than all of us old-timers thought it would this year in regard to water level and with all the fish in there next year should be great although there are still two months to fish this year and limits come easy.  The biggest fish I caught was 3.5 lbs. and put up a great fight.   I only counted about ten boats on the lake between 7-12  in the morning so pressure is light on the fishery.  I would rate fishing as excellent, this is a great place to soak some bait and catch some rays right now! Just some scant remnants of the once proud snowpack that adorned the peaks above Twin Lakes.  It was rather hazy from the smoke all the fires are sending our way.
...
The lake was glass all morning with the wind never reaching 5mph.  Early Morning shot.

Some fish Porn, these babies will be in the smoker tomorrow.

The pelicans seemed to be having quite a bit of luck fishing also. Wink Grin

TF,
Those are some nice looking fish there. For this time of year the lake doesn't look to bad.
Looks a little on the warm side, but then again what doesn't.

I so need a trip to higher climbs, oh yeah tomorrow.  Grin

Nice report TF. Sweet looking fish and that's a heck of a lot of hip external rotation you have in the 2nd to last pic!

Every time I drive by Bridgeport Res on my way to the East Walker I think about fishing it with my boat in the morning and hitting the Walker in the afternoon... this makes me want to do that even more. Thanks for info Smiley.

It was very calm today but the temps peaked at about 75F.  So it was actually quite bearable.  Tomorrow is suppose to be breezier and a high of 68F.  Wink

yeah it's abit of a trick taking pictures of the fish when you're fishing solo.  I don't want to touch the fish and muck up the camera so I shoot when I can.  That sucker was flopping all over and when he stopped for a moment my shoes were in the way so I did my best Charlie Chaplin and clicked the shot! Way to go TF. Seems to be good news for Bridgeport. Those are fat and happy bows. Above average snow will make for a great lake next year.

Oh yeah it should be an epic year next year.  They've got atleast one more Alpers dump and the BEP is planning at least one more big dump.  Now all we need is lots of snow!

Those are some decent smokers Eric but with your small craft and fishing ability you should give it a whirl sometime in the Spring or better yet now until closing.  There are some real brutes in there and the browns are coming of age.  October should be a great month for big holdovers on this water.  Whether you're a sophisticated fly guy or a bait dunker there are some nice fish to be had. Looking Good TF! I neglected to check water levels and such and did a spur of the moment 4 day trip to lake Almanor instead of BP res... I'm sure I would have had more fun in the North River or Kayak at Bridgeport Res! It's good to see you out pulling in those beauties! What's the scoop on end of season browns?... PM me! Mark

I agree Sockeye those Sturgies are great eating.  Four out of the five I kept had red meat.  It was just nice to get out on the water and relax with some good fishing.  It's been a long hot summer and as the temps cool the fishing will heat up.  The only fish I like eating as much as Sturgie are the Dodos i'll be catching in the middle of October in Mexico. Goldentrout, my biggest out of Bridgeport still-fishing was 7.5 a few years back and this year I got one about five and several around four pounds.  May was a very good month out here.  Mark, if you bring your Yak out here i'm sure you'll get some blood on the deck.  The second half of September and October should be very good fishing. No fish shortage here although i haven't seen or heard about any nice browns.  We both know they're in there and they will probably make a showing as the temps cool.  They stocked several batches of sub-catchable browns in there this year with the latest being last week with 5000 4-6".  I haven't seen a Brownie since opening day.
