Trinity River Summer Runs
Jul 16th, 2009 at 8:25pm

Not a report but I thought I'd get things started with a heads up.

The Summer Runs are coming to the Trinity. I'll tell you how I do it and what to expect for anybody new to the river and is thinking about making a trip soon.

From now till the end of September is "MY" prime time. September being the best. The summer runs are active, the jacks are thick and kings are starting to show up.These are the months when the fisherman are scarce.
I go exclusively spinners. After years of fishing this river from shore I have narrowed my selection to a mepps agila brass blade #4. Although those RvrFshr spinners sure look nice Smiley
You need to work the river HARD to score. I could spend a whole day on the river working from ceder flat to the Northfork and scoring 3 steelies in the 5 to 7lb class would be a GREAT day. But just getting that feeling of one 5 to 7 lber on my line is enough. Most fish come from the head of the pools in the fast water. The salmon you will score as Summer ends are a nice bonus. Mostly found in the tail ends of the pools.
I never spend more then 25 casts at a hole. If nothing happens I move on. Not a whole lot of fish in the system right now so you need to find them.

Come October the river is full of Salmon ( hopefully right? ) and Steelhead. You will also be sharing the river with lots of fisherman. There's still lots of room to fish but its nice not having to share a spot.
October seems to be the time for bait as the water cools. Of course I still fish with the spinners but the bait fisherman seem to do better(Unless of course Dr, K was out their spin fishing Smiley ).

Pros this time of year : Fish to be had, very few fisherman

Cons this time year : The canyon gets hotter then blazes, you need to work hard for the fish

tarbuckle, try just a little bit further upstream than the North Fork.  I've caught some beautiful Steelhead at the Cable Hole, cast a spinner upstream, from the Rock and back reel like crazy, the Steelhead like to sit beneath the Rock where they can swoop onto food.  Works well with Roe also, you will loose some tackle doing this, but there are always Steelies hanging in there, my best was a 12lb, in September two years ago.

Anytime, I've been fishing that River with my Wife for over 20 years, so I know a few spots, and I never hesitate to share with others.

Great info Tarbuckle...

I don't know if you remember me but I was the other guy fishing with Dr K and GhostFishSlayer when you rolled up with your buddy and first met the Doc.

I usually go to the Trin a couple times each summer but this year its been hard to get up there.

we should hook up sometime...I love fishing for those early fall steelies.

I remember. Next time you make it up let me know. I'm usually on the river every Tuesday or Wednesday and would be able to fish the evenings.

Tarbuckle....

I used to have a small construction company just out of Eureka....clients knew...if there were fish in the river we weren't going to be there...it was part of the deal.... Grin Grin

Oh for those days Cheesy

this was our favorite time as well....not so much pressure on the river and lots of half pounders and jacks on ultralight gear

I'm going to have to make a trip up that way Wink

Great advice and help Tarbuckle! Spinners are almost all I use up there until October. I like brass or silver,,,that I use a perm. magic marker on 50/50 at first light and then darker as the sun hits the water. My favorite is the old Pen-tac spinners in 2s and 3s. God they were good spinners.
And YEA,,,it's hit and run,,,,hit and run,,,,hit and run, a lot of work. What pound test do you like to run through the summer?

I go 8 lb. Although things get tough when you hook into a 15lb Salmon
