Cool at Caples 07/15/09 (Pics)
Jul 15th, 2009 at 10:50pm

To beat the heat go high. Dave and I arrived at Caples Lake (7,800 feet) at 0700 and started fishing the south corner of the dam. We fished until around 1030 and caught 13 trout between us. These were mostly small Bows and nice little brookies. The were mostly caught on Kastmasters with a couple falling to Gulp and a worm suspended from a bobber. Not all fish caught in this area were small. Next to us there were three gentlemen from the Placerville area. While casting my lure I notice out of the corner of my eye something huge erupt from the water. One of the guys fishing with Powerbait has on something huge. As the angler gets his fish near the shore they get out the net which
turns out to be a tiny willow affair that couldn't handle anything much over 16 inches. This fish was over 16 inches. Waaaay over 16 inches. Fortunately I had The Weez with me. Wink The Weez is a large 5 foot net
named after another local who convinced to get the thing. I waded out a little to get past shore rocks and the fish was netted. It was a 28 inch 8 1/4 pound Nebraska Bow. What a beautiful fish. Dave and I left
not too long after this and decided to stop at Hope Valley for a look on the way back home. There was only one person fishing there when we arrived and it turned out to be Wolfden's brother from the Sacramento area. He's camped there through the weekend. He said that there were still some big fish there but they weren't hitting. He turned out to be right on both accounts. Dave and I fished awhile with Gulp and lures but they weren't interested. Back down to the Carson Valley and the heat. It was a wonderful day. Cool fishing with you again Dave.

Hi Guys!
Captain, one of these days YOU will be catching one of those big uns at Caples instead of netting them for someone else!   Cheesy
